Tax Relief for Craft Brewers on the Horizon

Bills have recently been introduced in both the House and Senate that would reform taxes owed by craft beer producers.

The bills, both titled the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act (H.R. 2903 and S. 1562), mirror each other and would:

  • Reduce federal excise tax to $3.50 per barrel up to 60,000 barrels for domestic brewers producing less than 2 million barrels annually
  • Reduce federal excise tax to $16 per barrel up to 6 million barrels for all other brewers and importers
  • Maintain the $18 per barrel federal excise tax for producers over 6 million

The bills have received welcome praise by the Brewers Association.

Unfortunately, there is probably quite some time (at least a year) until the bills are passed and sent to the President for a signature, but tax relief on the horizon is good news for craft brewers who would rather spend money directly on the brewery instead of giving it to Uncle Sam.
